The Awakening

The Awakening

Running time: N/A

Awakening, a beautifully crafted work from Hungary, tells the story of a girl's transition into womanhood under the most difficult of circumstances. As the film opens, Kati, 13, learns of her mother's death. Life in the Stalinist Hungary of the early-50's is hard enough, but now Kati is without her anchor and greatest comfort. Her father goes where the work is and that takes him away from her. An attempt to live with an uncle proves disastrous. So Kati moves back into her old apartment which, due to a housing shortage, she must share with others. Among them: a colorful old gent who loves reciting Shakespeare. She feels affection for the old man, but nothing like she feels for one special tenant. When Kati needs help, solace or words of advice, this one special person is always there. She seems to emerge from the shadows at just the right time, say her peace, and then she is gone. And why shouldn't Kati feel so much love and affection for someone so special, for...her mother? Kati cannot - will not - let go of her; she needs her too much. But with each visitation, sadness and longing accompany the feelings of happiness. The girl is trapped, unable to go on with her life. Then, one day, a young man shows up on her doorstep. She impulsively asks him to move into the apartment. He soon occupies, not only a space in the apartment, but also one in her heart. Without letting her mother slip away completely, Kati is able to let go of some of the pain. The past ceases to be a ball-and-chain; the future - still full of uncertainty - is no longer to be feared. Kati can make her own way now, thanks to a special someone.
