Afterlife
Running time: 93 mins
What do you do when Dad dies - and then just won't go away? Mozes is a stonefaced Hungarian Buster Keaton look-alike with confidence issues. His father Janos is a self-centered authoritarian tyrant. But Janos dies, becomes a ghost - and goes through a complete personality change. Melancholic and confused, he just hangs around, can't seem to leave. Can a car mechanic-cum-psychic help? Can Mozes? And what about the rest of Mozes' loopy family, from his overbearing class-conscious aunt to his shotgun-toting adopted sister? In the best tradition of eastern European comedy, this not quite realist slice of life can flip on a dime from deadpan comedy to darkly serious, from surreal satire to outright farce, and still end with a series of just desserts and satisfying conclusions. Dying has never been this much fun. - Charlie Cockey
