Watch out world, Joi is on the scene. True, she just quit her job and found out - the hard way - that her boyfriend is gay, but sometimes you have to start all over to get it right. New city, new job and Joi is ready for anything. Anything but a devastatingly handsome but overly condescending boss, a backstabbing best friend and an overbearing mother with way too much attitude. Masquerade is a heartwarming, fun, romantic comedy for today. Light, engaging dialogue, well-drawn, well-played supporting roles, a case of mistaken identity and beautiful actors and actresses with great hair.

When it comes to urban films, celebrated director Clement Virgo's Love Come Down is a profound detour from the usual I-can't-get-out-of-the-hood, low-budget fodder force-fed to audiences from both independent and studio directors. Virgo's independent endeavor is hip, raw, sexy and deceptively spiritual. Two brothers, Neville and Matt--one black, one white--are nearly polar opposites in appearance and personality but share one vital common thread--the same mother, who is White.

The word "just" has no part in the incredible work of the Medea Project. Lawrence Andrews' latest film illustrates the work of the women of the Medea Project, a theater for incarcerated women, as their creations send them on a self-exploratory journey that culminates in a public group performance piece. Veteran theater actor and director Rhodessa Jones was inspired to begin this program when she taught classes at the San Francisco County Jail. Through her students' incredible pasts, telling stories that they had never shared, Rhodessa saw the seeds of a powerful performance piece.

Many view Alcatraz simply as an abandoned prison and tourist attraction. For some, however, it is an inspiration. The year 1969 saw the occupation of Alcatraz Island by Native American activists in one of the most turbulent periods in modern American history. Director James Fortier's superb re-telling of events shows the nascent Native American struggle to establish identity in a sea of cultural arrogance and indifference.
