Winner of three Academy Awards and eight nominations after its release in 1977, Fred Zinnemann's Julia, based on Lillian Hellman's memoirs, certainly deserves the title ''classic''. Julia covers those years in the 1930s when Lillian attained fame with the production of her first play The Little Foxes on Broadway. Not surprisingly, the film centers on Hellman's relationship with her lifelong friend, Julia. It is a relationship that goes beyond mere acquaintance, and one for which the word ''love'' seems appropriate.

They're creepy and they're kooky." We all know the song. Fresh off his stint as cinematographer for the Coen Brothers, Barry Sonnenfeld's directorial debut keeps in line with the original Charles Addams cartoons, but adds the quirkiness which has become known as his own unique vision. The ghoulish family still lives in the familiar Gothic mansion we remember from the series, next to its own graveyard, on a blasted heath where nothing grows except for dead things.

This fascinating and lively film, originally conceived as a loving tribute by a son to his father, brings back to the spotlight a director recently neglected by film history. William "Wild Bill" A. Wellman may not be as familiar to audiences as his peers John Ford, Frank Capra and Howard Hawks, but many of the movies which he directed stand out as popularly acknowledged classics in the history of Hollywood filmmaking.
