Companies like Industrial Light & Magic, Pixar, Adobe, Silicon Graphics and Pacific Data Images have all contributed to the greater interest given to Bay Area film artists in the last ten years, and Cinequest's Mavericks: Bay and Beyond series has been designed to celebrate the work and achievements of those innovators in film who have made the Bay Area their home in some way.

Cinequest is proud to join forces with the National Asian American Telecommunications Association (NAATA) to present one of the most influential movies in the history of filmmaking in the Philippines. Director Marilou Diaz-Abaya's In the Navel of the Sea has made ripples in the theaters of its home country and in film festivals around the world. With beautiful cinematography and some of the most memorable characters to grace the screen today, the story looks at big dreams, the importance of family and friends, love and identity.

March 2, 7:00pm (UA). Special Screening of Fibra Optica, an intense thriller of high-tech intrigue and political corruption from Mexican director Francisco Athi?. Included in this celebration is a party after the showing, hosted by the Mexican American Center for Latino Arts (MACLA) and catered by Casa Castillo Restaurant. An experienced director of both film and television projects, Francisco Athi? has studied cinema in London and the prestigious Centro de Capacitaci?n Cinematogr?fica in Mexico City.

Cinequest is proud to present such a special event for our 1999 closing night films. It's always been our tradition to honor maverick films and filmmakers at our festival, and you can be assured to enjoy the screenings of these two exciting films. We start off with a special screening of Shonda Rhimes' Blossoms & Veils, a short film starring Jada Pinkett Smith and Omar Epps. The film was produced by Will Smith Enterprises and is a beautiful story of discovery and love.

Special screening of the smart and highly entertaining comedy Angel's Dance, starring James Belushi, Sheryl Lee, Kyle Chandler and with Jon Polito. Special appearance by director David L. Corley. Opening Night party follows at A.P. Stump's. One of the rarest gems to discover in the world of film is a comedy that is both intelligent and entertaining throughout. Angel's Dance is such a find. The film succeeds at developing engaging characters and a dynamic story that never loses its verve. It's another day at work when the Lobrutto family's hitman tracks down their thieving accountant.

Mr. Cheever is committed to presenting cutting-edge work that utilizes Digital technology to release creativity. Many of the wonderful films shown in this exhibition were created with the combination of a home computer system, specialty software, and the human spirit. Don?t miss this highly entertaining show.

PDI (Pacific Data Images) wizards will present a fun and fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the making of ANTZ. Starring the voices of Woody Allen and Sharon Stone, ANTZ is PDI?s first fully computer-animated feature film and the latest achievement in a Silicon Valley success story. PDI's story closely parallels the history of computer animation. Established in 1980, PDI began creating broadcast graphics and later expanded into commercials.

In addition to being a leading world-expert on the life and work of Sam Peckinpah, Paul Seydor is one of Hollywood's finest editors. Amongst his outstanding pictures are Cobb and Tin Cup. During his presentation, Mr. Seydor will discuss many aspects of this extraordinary craft and address the pros and cons of digital/non-linear vs. traditional/flatbed editing. Cinequest is very honored to have Mr. Seydor join us for a seminar in the art of editing motion pictures.
