This new film by legendary Argentine director Eliseo Subiela is a brilliant piece of magical realism. It deals with reincarnation, technology and science, memory, and romance. In most films this is a prescription for mediocrity or worse. In Subiela's hands it is a moving, almost spiritual experience. He handles these elements with care and sensitivity, blending them into a unique and beautiful story somewhat reminiscent of Wim Wenders' Wings of Desire. Leopoldo is a film projectionist in a failing movie theater but he is also an inventor working on capturing dreams and making them visible.

The Devil Never Sleeps appears to be only the story of an interesting man and his family told after his death by his niece but it also reflects the cultural milieu of present day Mexico, its style and its mores. Lourdes Portillo, Mexico-born and Chicana identified, tells the story of her uncle Oscar through visits and interviews with family members in Mexico which she films in documentary style but which is often reminiscent of Rashomon in the way truth is seen by different observers.

In today's cinema, this is an unusually moving film because "nothing happens", in a literal way, but in an emotional and philosophical way everything happens. The basic story is that of a cloistered convent of nuns at the end of the last century living out the daily rituals of the religious life until an infant is abandoned at their door. The only outsider who visits is the local doctor, Don Josâ, who decides to adopt the baby if the nuns will raise her. The conversations between the nuns and between the mother superior and the doctor are the substance of the story.

In the halls of Cedarwood, the curriculum is the same as we find in every other school; English, Math, History and ... CDT (Children Destroy Teachers)? Okay. So, the curriculum is a little altered to coincide with the special student body of Cedarwood. You see, the student body is comprised of "maladjusted children" and their curriculum is what's known as "Special Need Education". Burnt out by the constant struggle to teach these kids, the teachers of Cedarwood seem to be maladjusted themselves nowadays.
