Lian is a sheltered sixteen-year-old Malaysian girl who is suddenly thrust out of her comfortable existence as a rich family's maid and forced to work in a strange hotel near Singapore's Bugis Street. It is there, in this place of dizzying confusion, that she must come to terms with the real world and all its conflicting opposites. Awakening, a beautifully crafted work from Hungary, tells the story of a girl's transition into womanhood under the most difficult of circumstances. As the film opens, Kati, 13, learns of her mother's death. Life in the Stalinist Hungary of the early-50's is hard enough, but now Kati is without her anchor and greatest comfort. Her father goes where the work is and that takes him away from her. An attempt to live with an uncle proves disastrous. So Kati moves back into her old apartment which, due to a housing shortage, she must share with others.
